Myth of Empires studio seeks to take Studio Wildcard and Snail Games to court over Steam DMCA takedown

We are a few days removed from the release of Jurassic World Evolution, which was met with mixed reviews. Studio Wildcard claims to have received DMCA takedowns on the game’s Steam page due to copyright infringement issues. However, it appears that this is not true and Ubisoft has no complaints about any games or terms in JWE.

A new game studio has filed a lawsuit against Studio Wildcard and Snail Games as they seek to take over the two companies in order to gain access to their games.

The “myth of empires steam” is a studio that has gone to court over the Steam DMCA takedown. They are seeking $1,000,000 in damages for copyright infringement and unfair competition.

As far as MMO early access releases go, Myth of Empires’ was by far the strangest. The combination survival sandbox and real-time strategy game, which first appeared on our radar at the beginning of the year and was released to Steam early access this past November, was abruptly removed from Steam due to a claim of copyright infringement from ARK: Survival Evolved developer Studio Wildcard and publisher Snail Games.

As originally reported by MMO Fallout, Myth’s studio Angela Game has subsequently retaliated against the corporations, filing a lawsuit in the Central District of California this past Thursday. The lawsuit requests a jury trial for a declarative judgment of non-liability for copyright infringement and trade secret theft, which practically says Angela Game wants the matter reviewed by a jury. Snail Games is also being sued for damages, as well as attorney fees and legal expenses, in connection with the infringement claim.

Angela Game’s attorneys cited two pieces of evidence in the complaint, including a letter from Snail Games to Valve, as well as code snippets from both ARK and Myth. Snail Games’ complaint to Valve, according to the filing, “does not present any material or substantial quantity of Myth of Empires software code, but attaches a document that misleadingly presents, out of order, an extremely small set of ‘names’ that exist in Myth of Empires source code, and omits software code that actually drives the operation of [the game].”

It remains to be seen if Studio Wildcard or Snail Games will reply, but for the time being, it seems that this legal war is only getting started.
