Kenyan athlete Lydia Tirop was found dead in her hotel room on the morning of April 23rd, sparking a police investigation. Her husband, Samson Kipketer, has been arrested and is being held as a “suspect” while authorities investigate.
Kenyan athlete Tirop was found dead on Saturday, but the cause of death is unknown. Her husband is now a suspect in her murder case.
Agnes Tirop of Kenya set the world record for a women’s 10km road race in September in Germany.
Agnes Tirop, a Kenyan world record holder, was discovered stabbed to death at her house in the western town of Iten, with her husband being investigated as a suspect.
The 25-year-old two-time World Athletics Championships bronze medalist, who placed fourth in the Olympic 5,000m final two months ago, was a two-time World Athletics Championships bronze medalist.
Her death is now the subject of a criminal investigation, with police reporting that her spouse has gone missing.
Crime scene investigators were at Tirop’s home on Wednesday, after her father reported her missing on Tuesday night, according to police.
“They discovered Tirop on the bed and a puddle of blood on the floor when [police] arrived in the home,” Tom Makori, the area’s chief of police, said.
“They saw she’d been stabbed in the neck, which led us to think it was a knife wound, and we believe that’s what killed her.”
“Her spouse has yet to be apprehended, and early investigations indicate that he is a suspect since he has not been located. Police are looking for her spouse in order for him to explain what happened to Tirop.”
Makori went on to say that authorities think the house’s CCTV may aid their investigation.
Tirop was also discovered dead with a knife wound to her stomach, according to reports.
Success on the sports field
“Athletics Kenya is heartbroken to learn of the tragic demise of World 10,000m bronze medalist Agnes Tirop,” the country’s athletics governing body stated in a statement.
“We’re currently looking into the circumstances surrounding her death. Thanks to her eye-catching achievements on the track, Kenya has lost a gem who was one of the fastest-rising athletics giants on the world scene.”

Tirop finished narrowly outside the medal positions in the women’s 5,000m at the 2020 Olympic Games in August, behind Ethiopia’s bronze medalist Gudaf Tsegay by 0.75 seconds.
Tirop wowed on and off the field, winning bronze medals in the 10,000m at both the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships.
At September, she established a new 10km road race record in Herzogenaurach, Germany, with a time of 30 minutes and one second, shaving 28 seconds off the previous mark set in 2002.
Tirop started her athletic career as a youngster in 2011, earning two bronze medals in the 5,000m at the global junior championships.
She won the senior World Cross Country Championships in China four years later, becoming the second-youngest medalist at that level, amid a meteoric rise.
“It is disturbing, totally terrible, and extremely sad that we have lost a young and talented athlete who, at the tender age of 25, gave our nation so much honor,” Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said. external-link
“It’s much more sad that Agnes, a Kenyan hero in every way, wasted her young life as a result of a criminal crime committed by selfish and cowardly individuals.”
“I encourage our law enforcement authorities to find and arrest the criminals who murdered Agnes so that they may face the full force of the law,” the president said.
